In 2003, there was apparently no bigger story in the world than the status of Spears’s virginity, and the “journalists” of the era seemed to feel inherently comfortable interrogating her about it. Long before she was famous or even in her teen years, TV hosts asked Spears if she had a boyfriend; later, speculation ran amok over whether she had indeed slept with then beau Justin Timberlake, with Timberlake now facing backlash for sneeringly confirming that the two were sexually active.
It was—to say the least—a major surprise when I found myself wiping away tears halfway into the film. What I’d expected to be a typically salacious depiction of a teen celebrity’s youthful indiscretions turned out to be a deep and searching exploration of what it means to be internationally famous before you’re legally able to vote. More than that, though, Framing Britney Spears functions as a kind of time capsule of all the casual sexism that we, as a society, thought it was perfectly okay to hurl at teenage girls in the early 2000s—and watching it, I was reminded of the subtle, inchoate ways in which the media’s treatment of Spears had affected my view of my own nascent sexuality.
